For many Brazilians involved with image and culture, the figure of the historical traveling artist has likely remained vivid in their memory since their school days. In my case, during adolescence, this human figure emerged in the classroom as something fascinating, and it has remained so to this day. It was a foreign artist, usually European, a skilled illustrator, who abandoned the comfort of home to venture on the long crossing of the Atlantic Ocean. Upon arriving, they recorded in drawings our geography, fauna, flora, ethnicities, and whatever else was of interest to visual reportage of that time, and which is indispensable today.
M.A.L.A 2026
Each year, M.A.L.A.'s artist books have a different country as their destination. In 2026, it will be Argentina. This itinerant nature brings a new cycle, and this change calls for a new perspective. If last year we crossed the ocean to reach France, the theme that guided us was "crossing." This year, we accumulate the history of getting to know North America, Europe, and now, South America. And the chosen theme was "Wandering the World".
What does it mean to wander the world?
Artist Chica Boyriven recounts that great spiritual masters wandered the world: Jesus Christ, Buddha, Gandhi… an exemplary detachment. Could wandering the world be a path to wisdom?
Monique Allain understands that "wandering the world" evokes the intrinsic movement inherent in the condition of existence. We make choices that guide us towards our dreams and goals, but the world has its own dynamics, and life takes us down unexpected paths. Living is like surfing the waves of time… it demands flexibility and attention to maintain balance on an unstable and constantly moving surface.
For Estela Vilela, "wanswring the world" speaks of movement towards the unknown, like Dante taking his first step into the darkness. It is about opening oneself to a journey that combines dream and reality, where the inner and outer landscapes mirror each other, inviting us to look inward as we walk outward. The artist's book becomes a kind of companion, collecting fragments, images, shadows, and everything that presents itself along the way.
The book, then, is jungle and trail,
It's a journey and a memory,
It is both world and shelter.
