Helio Mattos Jr.
Mini Bio
Hélio Mattos Jr., moving through the city and across different modes of expression, finds in the artist's book a way of constructing meaning through the folding and turning of pages. Drawn to wanderings. Through streets, alleyways, edges. Through papers, photographs, prints. Corners, remnants, borders. Prints, pixels, grain. Noise, tears, rhythms.
MY GAZE UN-KNOWS THE LANDSCAPE: Only now have I realized I never saw your face (O MEU OLHAR DES-CONHECE A PAISAGEM: Só agora eu reparei que não vi seu rosto)
My Gaze Un-knows the Landscape: Only Now Have I Realized I Never Saw Your Face begins with the contact sheets of two strips of photographic negatives made more than three decades ago, containing analogue photographs of people in Costa Pereira Square and of the statues on the steps of Anchieta Palace, in Vitória, taken by Hélio Mattos Jr. and Aluizio Marcelino do Nascimento Jr. From these images—enlarged, multiplied, layered, digitally altered, and screen printed—the book is created.
