WASTE PICKER (APANHADOR DE DESPERDÍCIO)
In Brazil, approximately 90 million tons of waste are produced annually, yet only 7.5% is recycled (Embrapa). An army of waste pickers helps mitigate the impact of this waste generation. They roam the streets collecting recyclable materials as a means of survival. Carolina de Jesus, author of the book *Quarto de Despejo* (published in English as *Child of the Dark*), is the waste picker best known by her full name. Her writing has been described as a "poetics of waste." "It seems I came into the world predestined to scavenge. The only thing I don't scavenge is happiness." The author passed away in 2014, but the carts and the waste pickers remain.
