THE BLUE OF DISTANCE
Lilian Parola
The artist draws from the immigrants' ocean crossing to explore the inner journeys necessary to become who we are. Inspired by the "blue of distance" described by Rebecca Solnit—the color of distant mountains, of melancholy—she investigates what is lost in approaching: the distant becomes near, but is no longer the same. It is the color of where we are not and where we will never be: the nostalgia of what is not now, nor will be. A space of absent presence.
