Helio Mattos Jr.
Mini Bio
Helio Mattos Jr., as he moves through the city and explores different forms of expression, finds in the artist’s book a way to construct meaning through the folding and turning of its pages. He is fascinated by wanderings: through streets, alleys, and borders; through papers, photographs, and prints. Leftovers, scraps, shadows. Corners, cutouts, edges. Engravings, pixels, grains. Tears, noises, rhythms.
MERGULHO (DIVING)
On his ritual-like walks along the seashore, Hélio Mattos Jr. always heads to the pier to observe a corroded structure—the ruins of Vitória’s old waterway—partially submerged by the tides. He incorporates photographs of this object and the surrounding sea into a DIVING that is both introspective and open to the revelations of the image itself—images that deteriorate and regenerate through enlargement, cropping, saturation, wear, and sequencing, suggesting new landscapes, textures, and narratives.
