big news: in-person initial week
For this edition, we have prepared a great novelty: our residency will begin with a week of in-person classes in February, inaugurating a hybrid format. This immersion, which will take place from February 3 to 7, 2025, has as its main objective to deepen the practices of book structure. By working with volumetry as an expressive element, we seek to provide the necessary tools so that participants can create a cohesive and powerful work. The idea is that, by familiarizing themselves with the paper, the folds , the formats and the countless possibilities that bookbinding offers, the participant will feel encouraged to explore new dimensions of temporality and spatiality. This process allows the structure of the book to become a natural extension of the narrative, adding layers of meaning and depth to the work.
To make the most of this "incubation" period, we organize an intensive week, from Monday to Friday, totaling 35 hours of immersion.

After considering several venues, we chose superbacana+ because it is a welcoming and inspiring environment. During MALA's immersive week, we will have access to a very complete infrastructure, which includes air conditioning, tables to accommodate up to 30 people, audiovisual support, and a special selection of drinks and snacks.
With a modern space and a wide view, we believe that this place offers a good environment to guarantee an intense and productive experience .

In addition to the 35 immersive hours of the initial in-person week , we will have 30 meetings to monitor projects, read and talk about texts chosen for each edition.

the book fair
Just like in 2024, we will participate in the book fair, produced by Quatro Cinco Um and which takes place annually at the Pacaembú stadium.
We will have an exhibition table to present the work and processes.

We are very happy to announce that at the end of the residency, all participants will have their work exhibited at the Enseigne des Oudin Gallery in Paris!
The exhibition will run for 15 days from September 25 to October 9, with a talk at the opening. For those who decide to visit the works in Paris, we will offer a guided tour of studios, museums and libraries.

It will take place at the Médiathèque Marguerite Duras, which in addition to housing our exhibition will feature bookbinding and graphic experimentation workshops.

It will take place between November and December at Galeria Página, in Vila Madalena.

At the end of the residency, a folder will be produced by artist and designer André Hellmeister, which, in addition to images from each participant's books, will also contain photos of the exhibition in Paris and information and testimonials from residents about the studios visited, their respective artists and the experience in general.
